A Story that you do not want to tell to friends and family.
After my house was broken into, crime became a reality of my life. Sure, I’d heard all the statistics but I always thought -- “Not in My Backyard!” Was I a fool -- I locked the barn after the horse was gone. I bought a home security surveillance system after having my valuables taken and my personal privacy violated.
In my quest to keep others from sharing the same awful fate, I would like to share what I learned in my quest for my own home alarms system. Hopefully, it will help you preserve the sanctity of your home.
WHAT TYPE OF HOME SECURITY SYSTEM DO YOU NEED?
The easiest way to think about what kind of system you need is by your housing situation --
1. Do you live in a rental house or apartment? Then your best choice of home alarms systems is a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Security System or a Portable Alarm System.
2. Do you live in a home you are purchasing? Then your best choice of home security surveillance systems is a Wired or Wireless System, preferably with monitoring service.
FEATURES OF HOME SECURITY AND SURVEILLANCE SYSTEMS
1. DIY Security Systems or Portable Alarm Systems -- Best for Rentals and Apartments.
The benefits of DIY Security Systems and Portable Alarms are that they are inexpensive, easy to install and can be taken with you when you move. These systems can be purchased at your local hardware store or online for between $100 to $300 depending on quality and features.
The disadvantage of wireless and portable alarm systems is that batteries must be checked regularly to ensure your system is working properly. Investing in a DIY Security System powered by electricity with backup in event of outage can ensure that your security system is always up and running. A second disadvantage is that you have to install them yourself. If you are less than a handy-man this may not be a good option for you.
Features can vary widely on these systems – along with the price. Your system can be as little as one monitoring a few doors and windows to a full-blown system monitoring all entry points with motion detection in all rooms.
Although these systems do not offer the full benefit of monitored security and surveillance systems, they can still be very effective at preventing unwanted intrusion into your home. Having this amount of security far surpasses having no security at all.
2. Wired or Wireless Home Security Surveillance Systems -- Best for Homeowners.
The benefits of Wired or Wireless Home Security Surveillance Systems are that they can provide emergency monitoring systems that alert the authorities in the event of any break in your security barrier. And with the correct installation, these home security systems can reduce your Homeowners Insurance by 10% or more.
The disadvantage of a wireless system is the same as those of a DIY system -- batteries power it and the batteries must be checked frequently to ensure the system is working properly. You also may have to install your system yourself, in which case you need to be sure you have the requisite skills.
Features can vary widely depending on price paid. Your system can have window and door sensors, motion detectors, perimeter sensors, surveillance cameras, panic alarm buttons and fire alarms. A good alarm company will also include professional installation -- making sure that all entry points are covered, that the system operates properly, and they will give you a detailed explanation about how the system works.
The main difference between wired and wireless home security systems is the cost. Wireless systems can have many of the features of wired system at a significantly lower price-- yet can be equally effective at preventing break-ins.
CONCLUSION
You will need to base your home security surveillance system decision on your budget and needs. It is important to take your time and shop around until you understand security products and have narrowed your needs to those that specifically apply to your situation. Don’t decide on the first system you see. Make sure the system you buy is the system that is right for you. But do buy a home security system -- for your peace of mind and mine!
